The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an independent agency of the executive branch of the United States federal government responsible for the civilian space program as well as aeronautics and aerospace research.
In recent years, scientists have become increasingly concerned with the question of protecting Earth from potential collisions. For most of its history, humanity has relied on statistical unlikelihood to avoid catastrophic NEO impacts.
Earth is the third planet from the Sun, the densest planet in the Solar System, the largest of the Solar System’s four terrestrial planets, and the only astronomical object known to harbor life.
The Bible (from Koine Greek τὰ βιβλία, tà biblía, “the books”) is a collection of sacred texts in Judaism and Christianity. It is a collection of scriptures written at different times by different authors in different locations. Jews and Christians consider the books of the Bible to be a product of divine inspiration or an authoritative record of the relationship between God and humans.
There is an account in the book of Joshua which records the Sun as “standing still”. The story often circulates that NASA scientists, using computers to calculate orbits for the Earth and Sun, discovered that there was a “missing day”. Upon further examination, so the story goes, these scientists used their computers to find this missing day, proving the biblical record to be accurate. Is this story true?
They called in the service department to check it out and they said “what’s wrong?” Well they found there is a day missing in space, in elapsed time. They scratched their heads and tore their hair. There was no answer. Finally, a Christian man on the team said, “You know, one time I was in Sunday school and they talked about the sun standing still.”
According to Hill, the NASA scientists “were looking into the trajectories of known asteroids and meteors so we wouldn’t send astronauts and satellites up only to have them bump into something. Satellite orbits have to be laid out in terms of where the heavenly bodies will be so that the whole thing won’t become a head-on traffic collision.” As they ran the calculations of the planets’ positions back and forth over the centuries, “the computer stopped and put up a red flag. … They called in the service department to check it out”. When the technicians asked what the problem was, the operators replied “Well, the computer show’s there’s a day missing somewhere in elapsed time.”
The conflict between science and religion has had a long and colorful history. On many occasions a scientific fact or theory comes into conflict with someone’s pet literal interpretation of the Bible. These literalists have suffered many defeats. Most have retreated into either ignoring science, or simply declaring untrue those parts of science they don’t like.
